Bamboo flooring comes in several very different construction types. How they're made directly affects durability, price, and performance. Here's a clear breakdown.
How it's made
Bamboo stalks cut into strips, laid flat side by side, glued and pressed into planks.
What it looks like
Wide grain pattern with visible "knuckles" (nodes). Very natural, organic look.
Performance
Softer than other types. More prone to dents and scratches.
Best for: low-traffic homes or aesthetic-focused installs
How it's made
Bamboo strips turned on edge, glued together vertically, pressed into boards.
What it looks like
Cleaner, more uniform grain. Less visible nodes. More "timber-like" appearance.
Performance
Slightly harder than horizontal. Still not ultra-durable.
Best for: modern interiors where consistency matters
How it's made
Bamboo is shredded into fibres, soaked in resin, compressed under extreme heat and pressure into ultra-dense planks.
What it looks like
Dense, rich, slightly random grain. Can resemble hardwood.
Performance
2-3x harder than traditional bamboo. Highly scratch and dent resistant. Commercial-grade durability.
Best for: high-traffic homes, rentals, commercial spaces
How it's made
Thin bamboo layer (top veneer) bonded to a plywood or composite core. Often click-lock system.
What it looks like
Same surface as solid bamboo. Internally layered for stability.
Performance
More stable with moisture and temperature changes. Easier installation (floating floors).
Best for: apartments, renovations, or DIY installs
Horizontal/Vertical have lower density. Strand-woven is extremely high density - that's where the hardness comes from.
Bamboo can be "carbonised" (heated to darken it). This creates warmer tones but reduces hardness slightly.
Cheap bamboo has thin coatings that scratch easily. Premium products use multiple polyurethane coats (8-11 layers).
They assume all bamboo is "super hard." That's only true for strand-woven. The others are often softer than oak - which is where people get caught out.

Let's be honest, you're not on this page by accident.
You're probably dealing with at least one of these:
Cold, hard tiles that make the house echo and your feet hate winter
Cheap laminate or vinyl that looks plastic and starts swelling or lifting when life happens
Tired old carpet that traps dust, stains easily, and kills the look of an otherwise nice reno
Showroom confusion – ten different brands telling you theirs is "the best", and none of them explaining what's actually under your feet
Big-box stores where you deal with salespeople, not the people who'll actually install your floor
You don't want "some flooring".
You want a real floor that feels warm, looks classy, and lasts.
Bamboo is for people who still like nature under their feet.
You're not walking on plastic film over a picture of wood – you're walking on real, engineered bamboo planks. It feels alive: warmer, more forgiving, and more 'solid' than cheap laminate.
Bamboo is a rapidly renewable material – it grows back far faster than traditional hardwoods, making it one of the most sustainable flooring options available.
Modern bamboo is engineered for strength and coated with hard-wearing finishes: kids, pets, chairs, everyday life – all without babying your floor. TradeFlooring's bamboo comes with around a 25-year manufacturer's warranty and fire rating certification superior to many timber floors and carpets.
Wide planks, modern tones, and a natural grain that doesn't date like trendy vinyl prints. It's the kind of floor that actually makes the house feel more expensive.
There are plenty of places to buy "wood-look".
There's only one TradeFlooring.
TradeFlooring NZ is Northland's only independent importer and installer of natural bamboo flooring – so you're not paying three layers of middleman margin.
Many customers save up to around $25 per m² compared to typical NZ retail flooring prices.
Director Martin Drew is personally involved in each project – from product selection and quality control right through to pricing and installation methods.

Yes. TradeFlooring's bamboo products are engineered for strength and come with long manufacturer's warranties. Installed with the correct underlay, they handle everyday family life very well.
All hard flooring can scratch if abused, but quality bamboo is comparable or better than many traditional timber floors. Using felt pads under furniture and basic care goes a long way.
A lot of "click-clack" comes from poor underlay and bad installs. TradeFlooring pair their bamboo with the right underlay and proper prep so it feels more solid, warm and quiet underfoot.
They're based in Whangārei, servicing Northland and projects across greater Auckland, with supply-only and ship-nationwide options as well.
Yes. TradeFlooring offer both supply-only and supply + install packages. Many builders use them as their bamboo supplier; many homeowners prefer the full, end-to-end service.
