If you're here, you probably want flooring that:
Is waterproof for kitchens, laundries, and high-spill areas
Is tough enough for pets, kids and tenants
Looks better than basic vinyl or lino
Isn't going to swell, peel or look wrecked in a couple of years
For a long time, SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) was the obvious answer. It was a big leap forward from old-school vinyl and laminate.
But like all good tech stories… there's now something better.
SPC solved a lot of problems – but it brought some of its own.
SPC uses a PVC/plastic core. For people who care about indoor air quality and plastic use, that's not ideal.
Dark floors in sunny rooms can expand and contract. Cheaper SPC boards can click apart, gap, or put pressure on skirtings over time.
Some SPC products have quite brittle click profiles. If the subfloor prep isn't perfect, or the installer is rough, those edges can crack.
Many SPC floors feel quite hard and 'plastic' underfoot – not the nicest for bare feet in winter.
SPC has gone commodity. Big stores fight on price, not quality, and cheapest-wins isn't great when you're walking on it for the next 10+ years.
So: SPC is fine.
You came here searching for SPC because you want something better than cheap vinyl.
Our job is to show you why MFB is better again.
MFB = Mineral Fiber Board
A new class of waterproof hard flooring that's 100% waterproof, PVC-free and zero plastic, ultra-stable under heat and moisture, built with a mineral fibre core instead of a plastic-heavy core.
Think of it as SPC's smarter cousin.
MFB uses a mineral fibre board core instead of PVC.
The mineral fibre core is engineered to be highly dimensionally stable – less expansion, less contraction, and less stress on click joints or skirtings when the sun hits the floor or humidity changes.
MFB is designed as a true waterproof floor, with structure and coatings that resist:
You still get that realistic wood appearance with EIR (Embossed In Register) surfaces – the grain you see is the grain you feel. It doesn't look like a cheap printed pattern.
High scratch resistance, waterproof core, and easy cleaning make MFB ideal for:
DualCore® MFB is exclusive to TradeFlooring NZ
You won't find it in big-box stores.
TradeFlooring NZ built its reputation importing bamboo and SPC flooring into Northland.
So why pivot toward MFB?
Because when a better technology lands – especially one that's:
…they're not going to pretend SPC is still the best thing on the planet.
As an independent importer (not tied to a specific retail chain), they can chase what actually works best in Kiwi homes – not whatever the head office has on promo this month.
So now, when someone asks for SPC, the conversation usually goes like this:
"SPC got us away from cheap PVC vinyl.
MFB gets us away from PVC altogether.
If we're putting a waterproof floor into your home today, we'd much rather it be MFB."
We're not going to just throw buzzwords at you and hope for the best.

Flooring is usually installed after other trades to keep your new floor protected. TradeFlooring coordinates timing so your floor goes down once the messy work is done.
A quick cheat sheet:
Most homes end up with a mix: bamboo in living/bedrooms, MFB in wet and high-abuse zones. We'll map that out with you on site.
(For People Who Came Here Thinking "Just SPC")
We focus on MFB as our main next-gen waterproof floor, because it's PVC-free and more stable than many SPC options. In some circumstances we can still work with SPC, but nine times out of ten we'll recommend MFB instead, and we'll explain why in your consult.
MFB is typically priced in the same ballpark as good-quality SPC. Because TradeFlooring imports directly, you're not paying three layers of middleman margin. The difference in performance vs cost is why we've shifted focus to MFB.
Yes – MFB is designed as a fully waterproof system, with a mineral core and protective layers engineered to resist water, stains and abrasion. It's used in high-moisture environments internationally and tested for dimensional stability under heat and humidity.
MFB products are constructed without PVC and are engineered for low emissions, with some lines achieving E0 formaldehyde standards. That makes them a strong choice for health-conscious households.
In practice, most people just feel: solid, quiet, and comfortable. The core composition is different, but what you'll notice is a stable floor that doesn't feel hollow or plasticky when installed with proper underlay and prep.
Every home is different: sun, subfloor, moisture, family, pets, and how hard you are on your floors all matter.
This page gives you the SPC vs MFB story in plain language, but your free onsite consult is where we look at your rooms, check your subfloor, and put the right product in the right place – for the long term.
