Flooring Underlay for Concrete Slabs Explained

Choosing flooring underlay for concrete slabs means managing moisture, sound and flatness properly before your new floor is laid in a New Zealand home.

A concrete slab can look dry, feel hard and still be the reason a new floor fails. Moisture moves through concrete slowly, particularly in newer builds, ground-floor rooms and homes with limited subfloor ventilation around adjoining areas. That is why choosing the right flooring underlay for concrete slabs is not an accessory decision. It is part of the floor system.

Get it right and your floating floor feels solid, sounds quieter underfoot and performs as it should. Get it wrong and you can end up with trapped moisture, movement, hollow spots, damaged joins or a floor that simply does not feel finished. No costly shortcuts. No guessing from the packet in the aisle.

Flooring underlay for concrete slabs starts with the slab

Underlay does not make an unsuitable slab suitable. Before selecting any product, the concrete needs to be assessed for moisture, flatness, surface condition and the intended flooring system.

Concrete continues releasing moisture long after it looks cured. A newly poured slab may need considerably more drying time than the build schedule suggests, especially through a wet Northland or Auckland winter. Older slabs are not automatically dry either. Ground moisture, failed damp-proof membranes, plumbing leaks, poor exterior drainage and changes to surrounding landscaping can all affect moisture levels.

A professional moisture test gives the installer useful information before material arrives on site. It is far cheaper to identify a moisture issue before laying floorboards than after skirtings, kitchen kickboards and furniture are back in place. If readings are outside the flooring manufacturer’s requirements, the answer may be more drying time, a compatible moisture barrier system or further investigation. It is not simply a thicker underlay.

Flatness matters just as much. Composite and floating flooring is tough, but it is not designed to bridge dips, ridges and rough trowel marks. High spots can place stress on locking joints; low areas can create bounce, clicking or a hollow sound. Underlay can soften minor texture. It cannot level a slab. Grinding or a suitable levelling compound may be required first.

What a concrete-floor underlay must do

The best underlay depends on the floor above it and the conditions below it. For a floating SPC or MFB floor, the underlay usually needs to control vapour, provide modest acoustic cushioning and support the locking system without allowing excess movement.

Moisture protection is the non-negotiable job

On concrete, vapour protection is usually the first consideration. This may be an integrated vapour barrier within the underlay or a separate polyethylene film installed as part of an approved system. Seams, overlaps, penetrations and perimeter detailing all matter. One unsealed join can compromise an otherwise careful installation.

Do not assume every foam underlay is a moisture barrier. Many are made primarily for comfort or sound reduction and need a separate film beneath them. Others include a barrier but are only approved for certain floor types or moisture conditions. The product specification and flooring warranty requirements need to line up.

For slabs with elevated moisture readings, a standard film may not be enough. A purpose-designed surface moisture barrier can be required, often applied directly to prepared concrete. This is a technical decision. The wrong membrane, or a coating applied to dusty or damp concrete, can create another failure point rather than solving the first one.

Support matters more than a soft feel

It is tempting to choose the thickest, softest underlay available. Under a click-lock floor, that can be the wrong move. Too much compression allows the boards to flex with foot traffic, putting extra load on the joins. Over time, that can lead to gapping, damaged locking edges or movement that should never have been there.

A quality dense underlay is designed to provide controlled support, not a sponge-like feel. You still get a more comfortable and quieter floor than bare concrete, but the planks remain properly supported. This is particularly relevant in busy family homes, hallways, kitchens and living areas where children, pets and daily traffic test every square metre.

Acoustic performance has limits

Underlay can reduce footfall noise inside a home and can be especially valuable upstairs or in multi-level properties. However, acoustic requirements in apartments and attached dwellings are not a matter of buying the most expensive roll. Building design, slab construction, ceiling assemblies and body corporate rules can all affect what is required.

If a project has a specified acoustic rating, confirm that the proposed flooring and underlay have evidence as a tested system. A rating for underlay alone does not guarantee the same result once it sits beneath a different floor product on a different slab.

Match the underlay to the floor, not just the room

SPC flooring is a strong option for concrete slabs because it is dimensionally stable, water-resistant and well suited to busy homes. It still requires a dry, flat substrate and the correct underlay beneath it. An integrated underlay can simplify installation on some SPC products, but it does not remove the need for moisture management where the manufacturer requires it.

MFB flooring also needs the right balance of vapour control and firm support. Its performance relies on a stable base and correctly prepared joins, particularly around kitchens, sliders and large open-plan spaces exposed to changing temperatures.

Bamboo flooring needs more careful product-specific planning. Some bamboo floors are floated; others are glued down. A floating bamboo system may use an approved underlay and vapour barrier over concrete. A glue-down installation generally requires a different substrate preparation and adhesive system. Putting a floating-floor underlay under a glue-down floor is not a workaround - the adhesive needs a suitable surface to bond to.

That distinction is why a one-size-fits-all underlay recommendation is risky. The right material depends on the flooring construction, installation method, slab condition and warranty instructions.

Large glazed areas create another layer of planning

Northland and Auckland homes often feature wide sliders, high windows and open living areas designed to catch the sun. They look brilliant, but direct heat can push flooring temperatures well above the room temperature. Underlay will not stop sun-generated heat from affecting a floor.

The floor choice, expansion allowance, layout direction and perimeter clearances all need to be planned for the room. Window coverings, shading and sensible product selection can also make a real difference. A good installer looks at the whole space, not just the square metreage on a plan.

The details that make an underlay perform

Even premium underlay fails to do its job if it is laid carelessly. The slab should be clean, dry and free from loose debris before installation. Sharp grit or dried plaster under a floating floor can telegraph through as noise and pressure points.

Underlay rolls should be laid in the required direction, kept flat and joined according to the system instructions. If a separate vapour barrier is used, it must be correctly overlapped and taped. Around door jambs, pipes, cabinetry and irregular walls, the barrier needs careful trimming without unnecessary holes.

Expansion gaps are another essential detail. Floating floors need room to respond to normal temperature and humidity changes. Underlay must not be bunched at walls or packed tightly into edges, where it can interfere with movement. Skirtings and aluminium trims finish the floor neatly while allowing the system to do what it was designed to do.

When underlay is not the answer

There are times when the correct advice is to stop before laying anything. Persistent dampness, visible efflorescence, cracking caused by slab movement, major unevenness or suspected leaks should be investigated first. Covering the symptoms may hide them briefly, but it does not remove the cause.

Likewise, if the finished floor height creates problems at exterior doors, stairs, appliances or existing tiled areas, the installation plan may need adjusting. A thinner approved system, substrate preparation or transition trim can resolve height differences, but only when considered before installation starts.

This is where free on-site measuring earns its keep. An experienced eye can pick up the practical details that do not appear on a showroom sample: a low slider track, a curved wall, a sun-drenched corner or a slab that is not as flat as it first appears.

Choose the system, then install it properly

The cheapest underlay is rarely the best value if it leaves out vapour protection, compresses too easily or is not approved for the flooring above it. Equally, the most heavily marketed acoustic product is unnecessary if it does not suit the slab, floor type or project requirements.
